Jeans have long been a versatile wardrobe essential for men, seamlessly transitioning across different settings and seasons. A classic blue pair can be paired with a crisp white shirt for an office-ready look. Swap the shirt for a funky T-shirt, and you’re set for a casual outing. Add a blazer and Oxford shoes to a simple white T-shirt, and you have a sophisticated high-low ensemble.
However, it’s time to venture beyond the tried-and-true blue denim. Top designers worldwide are infusing fun and creativity into men’s jeans, and this trend has caught on in India as well. Homegrown brands like Kanika Goyal, Dhruv Kapoor, and Huemn are leading the way with their innovative designs. Salman Khan’s anime-inspired jeans for the ‘Heeramandi’ screening have also sparked conversation.
The landscape of men’s jeans has undergone a significant transformation. Silhouettes, cuts, embellishments, and colors have all evolved. While classic blue jeans remain timeless, current trends favor bold and streetwear-inspired styles. Skinny jeans, much like in women’s fashion, are falling out of favor.
“There has been a noticeable shift from tight-fitting skinny jeans towards looser styles,” says Amritha Ram, creative director of KH House of Khaddar. “Many brands are now offering jeans inspired by vintage aesthetics, featuring flares or wider legs, which are becoming popular among men looking to refresh their denim collection. Playful denim, characterized by unique cuts, colors, and details, is also making waves as brands reinvent classic styles with a modern twist.”
This sentiment is reflected in new collections from brands like Louis Vuitton, Fendi, and Ami Paris. The Spring/Summer runway shows this year highlighted the fashion world’s enthusiasm for redefining men’s jeans.
Bootcut jeans, once considered outdated, are making a comeback. There’s a noticeable shift from straight and skinny styles to roomier, baggier hems. Sequins and shimmering embellishments are also set to make a return. Ultra-wide jeans have garnered significant attention, and stonewashed jeans with vibrant patches are gaining popularity. Oversized patch pockets are a favorite feature, with top brands like Amiri and Dsquared2 leading the trend.
Fringes, traditionally seen in women’s fashion, are making their way into men’s jeans as gender-neutral clothing continues to rise. Brands like Fendi are incorporating fringed hems into their designs. Collections from Loewe, Louis Vuitton, Amiri, and Japanese label Taakk are rich in eclectic prints.
In India, the trend mirrors the international scene. While not yet mainstream, quirky jeans have intrigued many contemporary Indian designers. Kanika Goyal’s two-tone hybrid pants and Rkive City’s upcycled denims made from export waste are notable examples. Brands like Souled Store and Off-Duty offer affordable options for men looking to experiment with their denim styles.
