Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited (Tata Power-DDL), a key electricity provider catering to a population of 7 million in North Delhi, has proudly announced that it has successfully met a peak power demand of 2035 MW, marking the highest demand for this season within its operational area. Anticipating a potential surge, the company is gearing up for a peak power demand projection of 2351 MW this summer, and to ensure seamless supply, Tata Power-DDL has secured power purchase agreements totaling up to 2500 MW, in addition to contingency measures through both long and short-term arrangements.
The overall peak power demand for Delhi is estimated to reach 8000 MW this year, with last year’s peak recorded at 2012 MW on May 23rd within Tata Power-DDL’s operational jurisdiction. With the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) predicting a rise in temperatures in the upcoming days, the department may issue a yellow alert if the heat persists. IMD has recently warned of “severe heatwave conditions” expected over the weekend, marking the onset of the season’s first heatwave.
A spokesperson from the company highlighted Tata Power-DDL’s ability to meet the escalating demand amidst the scorching weather, citing successful responses to the peak demands of 1982 MW and 2035 MW on May 16th, demonstrating uninterrupted power supply without network constraints or outages. The spokesperson attributed this achievement to the company’s strategic planning, utilization of advanced technologies such as load forecasting, statistical modeling, and Battery Energy Storage Systems, enabling them to efficiently address the growing energy needs.
